Our dentist may recommend the Herbst Appliance or other types of functional orthodontic treatment to help improve your jaw function. The Herbst Appliance is fixed to your molars and includes a metal tube that connects the upper and lower jaw. This tube helps control the position of the jaw in relation to the upper teeth, ensuring that your jaw achieves proper alignment.
Unlike headgear, the Herbst Appliance is not removable, and it is very discreet. It does not require any outward attachments, such as a strap or head cap, and it may be visible to others only when you speak or laugh. Herbst orthodontic treatment typically lasts about 12 months, and it has been proven to reduce your time in braces.
You will probably experience some tenderness or soreness when you begin wearing your Herbst Appliance. This is normal, but the discomfort will fade as your mouth adjusts to the appliance. Your appliance may also cause some slight tissue irritation. Until your mouth adjusts, you can use dental wax to ease this irritation and improve your comfort levels. You should avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that might damage your appliance during your treatment.
